Position: Director, China R&D Portfolio and Strategic Operations

Location : Shanghai, China

Position Summary

This role provides critical support to China R&D head to: 1) drive and enable end-to-end China portfolio strategy execution for China R&D organization, with the intension to increase our agility, focus, and seamless coordination across our functional teams; 2) to provide or monitor key stakeholders’ status in China pharma ecosystem to support the strategy of pursuing and maintaining BMS China R&D with competitive advantage. This role also can lead transformative initiatives and high impact engagement events with senior leadership team through the collective support from other key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Execution

  • Engages functional area stakeholders to maintain the governance of China portfolio strategy execution, ex, CPRC (China Portfolio Review Committee), China R&D portfolio review; other portfolio review meeting with global relevant stakeholders. Adaptation of governance mechanism as appropriate according to business needs.

  • Track China R&D performance according to both internal company goal commitment and external industry benchmark.

  • Organize China R&D key management meetings; global drug development senior leadership team visits, etc.

  • Interactions with headquarter key counterparts to ensue the connectivity and alignment in drug development strategy, governance, execution, etc. Appreciates the criticalness of assurance of China participation in global development programs to enable simultaneous development.

  • Manage and interact with external and internal cross function teams to build positive image of China R&D within company and in China ecosystem.

  • Understands necessary commercial inputs needed to inform the end-to-end development process.

Key competency requirements

  • In depth understanding of portfolio governance mechanism

  • Understands the drug development process, from early to late stage, including lifecycle management.

  • Deep knowledge of portfolio governance including monitoring methodologies, systems, regulations/compliance, budget and resource management and site facing engagements etc.

  • Knowledge of the external pharma industry environment and stakeholders therein.

  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills and independent decision-making ability.

  • Highly organized and motivated possessing excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills;

  • Passionate, accountable and innovative critical thinker who balances risk/speed for maximum results;

  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to influence, inform or guide others.

  • Results oriented with proven track record in building strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to manage the China R&D book of work.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills (both in English and local language).

  • Software that must be used independently and without assistance

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors or Masters degree required.

  • 10+ years of experience in innovative drug development pharma industry setting.

  • At least 8-10 years solid expertise in project/portfolio management in the drug development process with in-depth know how and experience.

  • Strong understanding of drug development environment in China pharma ecosystem, including regulatory, clinical operations, etc.

  • Demonstrated business acumen and integrate critical observations in R&D business.

  • Working knowledge of all relevant functional areas of drug development, including clinical development, regulatory, BDS, clin ops, etc., and demonstrated ability to successfully and effectively cooperate, collaborate and work across functions.

  • Demonstrated ability to objectively assess complex based on limited information, make informed decisions and take action in the face of uncertainty.

  • Ability to effectively and seamlessly multi-task, and prioritize across multiple business needs.
