Job SummaryThe Category Manager is responsible for creating and executing VWR International’s strategy for growing a portfolio of Life Science products, both Core and MarketSource, in North America.The position will manage all aspects to launching and expanding the sale of the life science portfolio in North America. Incumbent will work collaboratively with Strategic Sourcing, Global Account Managers & Catalyst Services to develop plans and programs to convert products and/or entire suppliers from MarketSource (‘MS”) to VWR’s Core product portfolio with specific focus on the top 200 MS suppliers.
MAJOR JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (List in order of importance)
Creates a strategy to take market share of products including yet not limited to further penetration of existing products, new supplier acquisition and product line expansion.
Builds a cross-functional team of VWR associates and suppliers to execute the VWR strategy for growing the portfolio of products in North America.
Supports the Strategic Sourcing Team in the negotiation of Terms and Conditions with Suppliers.
Determines profitability of each of the product groups within the Product category and develops and executes strategies for improving that profitability.
Makes presentations to senior management regarding supplier consolidation program and the risks, costs and benefits of the proposed course(s) of action.
Assesses the market of innovative technical developments by both suppliers and competitors and determines our customer’s requirements for these innovations.
Implements supplier consolidation strategies to include changeover planning, discontinuance, super-cession, and communications internally and externally.
Attends industry trade shows and makes customer visits to learn about recent scientific product developments.
Audits major suppliers’ manufacturing plants to include reviewing manufacturing capacity, quality programs, and opportunities for driving out costs from existing processes so they can deliver better value to VWR and our customers.
Works with Strategic Sourcing, the MarketSource purchasing team, and product master data to ensure the integrity/compliance to contracts and customer specific price agreements.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Training, Experience and Certifications)
An Undergraduate degree required- Biology; Masters degree in business, or equivalent experience preferred
10+ years applicable experience
7+ years of research sales/ marketing or closely related experience required.
Five years leadership experience required.
Three years or more of actual laboratory experience in a research or quality control setting is strongly preferred
Experience with either tissue culture and/or cell biology/therapy
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Those necessary to perform the job competently)
Communication skills – ability to communicate effectively with a diverse number of consituities including Senior Leadership, Suppliers, Internal Customers and External Customers
Negotiating skills – to obtain the best financial Terms and Conditions for VWR from our suppliers
Exceptional analytical skills – ability to interpret information pertaining on sales reports, quality reports, purchasing reports in order to assess trends and address specific areas for opportunities for improvement
Financial skills – to assess sales, profit, inventory investment, payment terms, return on sales, return on capital employed and EBITDA to improve VWR’s financial performance
Scientific skills – to assess the technology and innovation of products and the application for our laboratory customers so that we can identify and negotiate with suppliers for those products that we anticipate that our customers will wish to purchase from VWR.
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT (Under Typical Positions)
Typically works in an office environment with adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level.
Work assignments are diversified. Examples of past precedent are used to resolve work problems. New alternatives may be developed to resolve problems.
A frequent volume of work and deadlines impose strain on routine basis.
Minimal physical effort is required. Work is mostly sedentary but does require walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting or carrying objects that typically weigh less than 10 lbs.
