Shrub Oak International School Recreations Coordinator - [Internal Applicants Only] in Mohegan Lake, New York

The Recreations Coordinator is a year-round position, reporting to the Director of Campus Life. They will assist in designing and overseeing the implementation of a robust, state of the art holistic athletics/activities program on campus and in the community, during the year and on school breaks, that supports the individualized and group development of our students. This pivotal role will require working collaboratively with the Director of Campus Life, the Program Manager, and other SOIS departments to ensure that scheduled programs are put in place , executed on time safely, and effectively. Utilizing a hand-on-hand approach. They will also be involved in modelling and supporting staff and students, modifying activities to ensure the success of the students, and collaborating with all members of the Shrub Oak staff. Having access to confidential information regarding Shrub Oak and its students, discretion and independent judgement is required. The Recreations Coordinator also actively assists with other programs, events, and services administered through Campus Life, and has the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of Campus Life responsibilities.

Essential Functions – Primary duties of the position

  • Create and implement holistic programming for on and off campus to include life skills, community, recreation, music, art, yoga, theatre, and more. Programs must be modified and differentiated based upon the needs of our students.

  • Research new activities continuously and build relationships (new and existing) with community organizations.

  • Visit potential activity sites to support new and existing student needs for holistic and scaled programming.

  • Provide direction and supervision to the Recreations Assistants.

  • Supports the creation of a robust activities program supporting the varied needs of our students after-school, and on weekends, coordinating with internal departments to ensure it supports and developmentally meets the needs of our students.

  • Modifying activities as needed to meet the individual needs of each student.

  • Complete administrative tasks, including but not limited to, teaching, assisting, completing shift logs, maintenance requests, incident reports, and progress tracking.

  • Proactively work with students in crisis to de-escalate situations using SOIS protocol as required, after being trained in TCIS .

  • Oversee the implementation of scheduled activities, monitoring and helping to maintain a safe environment.

  • Setting up and breaking down equipment for each activity

  • Assist with contract and vendor negotiation as needed and required.

  • Attend to and report all emergencies and/or other situations requiring immediate attention in a timely manner to the appropriate staff member(s) in accordance with Shrub Oak policies/procedures.

  • Support the individualized ITEP and other developmental goals for each student, collaborating with the ITEP team including documenting efforts and progress.

  • Collaborate with Campus Life staff to ensure all students maintain a regular and appropriate schedule of events and daily living activities.

  • Attend all required meetings and seminars as scheduled, including all staff orientation/training.

  • Support other department responsibilities as needed and determined

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  

    They must be able to help develop and implement recreational activities for individuals with autism. They must be able to adapt programming when needed for each individual. They must be willing to increase knowledge in regard to autism and behaviors related to autism in order to better plan for the students. They must be able to engage staff to implement programming. They must also be able to ask for assistance from the Program Manager when unsure of any factors of the position, as the Program Manager is there to support them.

    They must be able to make reasonable assessments and decisions, to handle the day-to-day aspects of the role; they will be required to make valued, informed assessments and recommendations, and consult for guidance as appropriate.

    Work Environment

    The work will generally be performed in an after-school and weekend residential school environment.

    Physical Demands

    Workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; Work regularly requires sustained concentration.

    Sitting at a desk for extended periods, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors) as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice.

    Physical demands are in excess of sitting, and require walking or standing to a significant degree. The Recreations Assistant is required to take part in activities with the students on top of moving throughout the campus on a routine basis and execute program operations.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    Weekdays after-school (Must include a weekend day). This is a 12-month position. Full-time staff work a traditional 40-hour work week, yet the demands of our work may require staff to work over and above that to meet program needs.
