The Department of Economics at Kent State University is seeking applicants for part-time faculty to teach basic undergraduate economics courses at KSU's American Academy at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná - Curitiba, Brazil. The responsibility of the Adjunct Professor is to teach the three (3) credit hour course with a cohort of students over a three-week period, with classes offered mornings and afternoons each weekday of the course period. The instruction, course material, and assignments are conducted in English. The course must be taught in keeping with the academic expectations of the Department of Economics at Kent State concerning learning outcomes, quality of course materials studied, as well as the number, type, and quality of student work assignments required in the determination of the course grade.

There is a particular need for Fall 2024 but applicants may be considered for teaching in future terms.

This is a special assignment in an exceptional program. Kent State students in the American Academy take their first two years of college coursework in Curitiba, Brazil. Upon completing the program, they may matriculate to the Kent campus and continue their bachelor's degree program. Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

 

Engaging students in interactive learning activities to meet course objectives. The curriculum follows the Kent State catalog description (see catalog.kent.edu) and is delivered in accordance with defined course standards and outcomes.

Adjunct faculty are expected to: • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments and handouts in accordance with departmental requirements. • Prepare and deliver learning activities to achieve course outcomes. • Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, papers, and examinations. • Maintain and submit student grades and other required documentation by specified deadlines. • Perform student learning outcome assessment for accreditation purposes. • Be available to students for office hours and out of classroom academic support. • Be sensitive to the needs of a diverse population. • May be asked to attend periodic meetings relative to teaching duties and training and development.

Instructors for sections at the American Academy must be willing to travel to Brazil; a valid passport is required. The Office of Global Education will make all flight and housing arrangements and will reimburse a daily living allowance as provided for by policy. Sections at the American Academy are typically held in intensive, 3-week modules.

Minimum Qualifications:

Successful candidates should have a master's degree in a relevant area; a doctoral degree is preferred. They should provide evidence of currency in the economics discipline, as demonstrated by an earned doctorate within the past five years OR relevant work experience, professional certifications, conference participations or peer-reviewed publications.
