Cornell Cooperative Extension Aquatics Coordinator- Hamden, NY in Hamden, New York

This position will serve as the Aquatics Coordinator of 4-H Camp Shankitunk. Camp Shankitunk is a traditional summer camp located in Delhi, NY. 4-H Camp Shankitunk operates both a day camp program (ages 6+) and an overnight program (ages 8-16) for youth in the summer and hires approximately 50-60 seasonal camp staff members. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is owned by Delaware County and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Delaware County.

The Aquatics Coordinator will coordinate and direct the development and implementation of the aquatics program. The individual will supervise senior and junior camp counselors assigned to aquatics activity periods to ensure quality programming.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old to comply with New York State Department of Health regulations.

  • One year experience as aquatics director or two years experience as a lifeguard at a children's camp or two seasons of previous experience consisting cumulatively of at least 12 weeks as a children's camp lifeguard, as specified in subdivision (g) of this section, at a swimming pool or bathing beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time; or at least 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard, at a swimming pool or bathing beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time

  • Current Lifeguard Certification as approved by the Local Health Department.

  • Current CPR for Professional Rescuer certificate or other CPR certification approved by the local Department of Health.

  • Current or ability to obtain a Lifeguard Supervision and Management certificate.

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.

  • Ability to supervise and organize staff members.

  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current or ability to obtain a Basic Swim Instructor Certification desirable.

  • Lifeguard and Progressive Swimming Instructor or Water Safety Instructor certificates are preferred.

  • Certification for teaching lifeguarding / First Aid and CPR desirable.

    Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Program Development – 5%

  • Research and develop educational resources (e.g., goals, lesson plans, skill-building activities, hands-on projects, experiments, etc.) for program staff.

    Program Evaluation – 5%

  • Prepare final program evaluation reports with future recommendations.

Administrative Direction - 45%

  • Plan staff training activities during pre-camp orientation and in-season training.

  • Provide highly complex administrative leadership to plan educational programs.

  • Lead problem- solving and conflict-resolution processes that effectively address camper and staff concerns, behavioral problems, and personal conflicts.

  • Plan the delivery of established positive youth development based on 4-H Essential Elements, the Search Institute, and other research -based information.

  • Support community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes acceptance, cooperation, and empathy.

  • Direct aquatics team guidance and communication, including conducting lifeguard meetings, directing lifeguard evaluation processes, skill verification, implementing performance improvement strategies as needed, and recognizing outstanding performance.

Administrative Management - 30%

  • Ensure compliance with camp policies and procedures protecting camper/staff health and safety.

  • Ensure aquatics staff maintains high health and safety standards in all aquatics activities.

  • Communicate regularly with aquatics staff to proactively identify and address areas of concern regarding health and safety.

  • Administer the daily a quatics program schedule effectively, balancing activities and daily routines, ensuring adequate lifeguard coverage, and adjust for weather-related or other exigencies.

  • Ensure staff documents critical incidents that occur in the aquatics program area.

  • Manage post-incidents in consultation with the camp director, including resolution w ith the camper(s) and staff, incident debriefing, and making recommendations for updating policies and procedures resulting from the incident.

  • Manage evaluation processes for aquatics staff performance, program and youth development outcomes, and camper satisfaction.

  • Regularly observe and evaluate aquatics staff and provide constructive feedback.

  • Regularly inspect program space and equipment for safe operation.

  • With Program Coordinators and Camp Director, develop daily and weekly educational and recreational activities schedules that offer variety, balance, and challenge.

  • Implement waterfront safety guidelines and procedures described in the camp safety plan.

  • Conduct swimming assessments on Sunday for overnight campers and Monday for day campers.

Coordination/Operation – 10%

  • Inventory program equipment and supplies and prepare the program area during pre-camp orientation.

  • Order program materials through the camp requisition process.

  • Ensure completion and submission of daily water testing requirements and bather records for NYS Department of Health, in cooperation with the Camp Facilities Coordinator.

  • For aquatics staff, prepare educational resources (e.g., goals, lesson plans, skill-building activities, hands-on projects, experiments, etc.).

  • Prepare year-end program inventory and supply orders.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

    Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt, temporary position that will run from June 1st - August 9th. The salary will range from $3,450 - $4,600. Salary is commensurate with experience, certifications, responsibilities, and availability.

The position will work at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in Delhi, NY. On-site residence during program preferred. Overnight accommodations provided (Sunday-Friday). Meals provided. Lifeguard Management Certification, WSI Certification, & Lifeguard Certification required.
