Job SummaryReports to Vice President, Technology & Innovation. Provides overall group leadership; manages discovery and development of new silicone products, process technology and customer applications.

  • Responsible for overall direction and general management of the Technology and Innovation organization within either the Biomaterials or Advanced Technologies business segment.

  • Ensures employees have a safe environment in which to work and that facilities are functional and adequate to support research and development activities.

  • Develops strategies / plans of action for the organization that supports the overall vision and mission of the enterprise.

  • Leads / drives innovation, technology development and product / process improvements within the enterprise. Owns Technology & Innovation output (new products, new applications, process improvements).

  • Responsible for development of new application technology.

  • Designs and staffs the T&I organization to support execution of the strategy. Assigns leadership of programs and projects.

  • Ensures effective coordination across all functions in the enterprise especially Executive, Sales & Marketing, Operations, Engineering, Finance, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs.

  • With marketing and sales management, identifies promising areas of research or technology that address unmet needs and have large potential markets.

  • Coordinates with Commercial team to support product pipeline - understand, assess technical merits / feasibility, prioritize and effectively resource projects to support enterprise growth and customer support.

  • Provides technical support for Commercial and Operations teams.

  • Coaches and develops employees to maximize and focus their professional growth and development to support the overall mission of the enterprise.

  • Prepares annual budgets and manages spending to meet budget.

  • Assesses performance of employees and takes action within the organization based upon those assessments.

  • Works with T&I Leadership across other Avantor businesses to develop and execute corporate level T&I strategy, translate high-level corporate needs to specific actions within the local organization.

  • Ensures the effective management of laboratory records/notes and emerging / existing company intellectual property portfolio.

  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills; ability to motivate and lead cross-functional teams.

  • High level of business acumen. Basic knowledge / understanding of all relevant business functions i.e., Finance, Sales, Marketing, Operations, Legal, Information Systems, Quality, Regulatory, etc.

  • Ability to lead change within the organization. Must be able to energize teams to drive innovation and create a new future for the company.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with colleagues at all levels

  • Must be able to represent Silicones / NuSil capabilities in wide variety of technical and commercial forums within and outside the company. Ability to negotiate with customers and vendors.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Advanced Degree in Chemistry or relevant technical field e.g., engineering, polymer science, materials science, etc.; or ten + years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong managerial and organizational skills required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Excellent communication skills with an ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical people and groups.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, budget and financial statements and/or governmental regulations.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited or no precedent exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
